About

Mr. Corbett

Picture
I am a science teacher at Valley Regional High School in Deep River, Connecticut. I hold a bachelor's degree in Biology from Eastern Connecticut State University, where my research focus was developing genetic modification experiments for high school and college laboratories. I also hold a Master's degree in Secondary Education from the University of New Haven. In the summers I've worked as an exhibit educator at Mystic Aquarium, giving talks on marine biology, husbandry, and conservation.

Cosmos

“The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us -- there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries.”
Carl Sagan
The invention of the word cosmos is generally attributed to Pythagoras, who set it in contrast to chaos. Cosmos is the order of things, the tendency of nature to follow rules and patterns -- the Laws of Nature.

These patterns have been painstakingly teased out by hundreds of generations of humans -- curious apes who domesticated themselves, invented writing, mathematics, art, poetry and humor. The sum of this hard-earned knowledge, as well as the system used to obtain it, comprises the academic disciplines and philosophy of science, and is often expressed in the language of mathematics.
